This module reinforced the importance of designing technology integration experiences that are purposeful, accessible, and connected to authentic learning goals. Within my current educational setting, many students have access to Chromebooks through school-issued devices, while others also have access to personal smartphones or tablets through BYOD opportunities. However, access is not always consistent outside of school, which means equitable access must remain an important consideration when designing technology-supported assessments.
To improve device accessibility, schools could continue expanding take-home device programs, provide mobile hotspots for families with limited internet access, and allow students multiple options for completing digital assignments both during and outside of school hours. Flexible access points help ensure that technology integration supports learning rather than creating additional barriers for students.
Smartphones could be used effectively within this assessment because students could photograph real-world fraction examples, record narration, capture videos, gather data, or upload multimedia elements directly into their digital stories. Students could also use smartphones collaboratively to document examples of fractions in authentic settings such as cooking, sports, shopping, or classroom activities. This type of learning encourages students to see mathematics beyond worksheets and isolated classroom tasks.
Digital storytelling is a highly effective assessment strategy because it allows students to demonstrate understanding in creative, authentic, and personalized ways. Rather than simply selecting answers on a traditional assessment, students must explain reasoning, organize ideas, communicate clearly, and apply concepts in meaningful contexts. Digital storytelling also supports differentiation because students can demonstrate learning using multiple formats including visuals, narration, text, and video. In a blended learning environment, this approach increases engagement while also helping teachers assess conceptual understanding, communication skills, and real-world application of content knowledge.
